Addiction to Technology

My mom just came into my room and told me to keep my phone away and rather do something creative and productive “ok mom” I said.

The next movement I was on my laptop I was playing Sudoku. The newspaper kept near me looked discontent at me and I played no heed to him. This is not the scenario in my house the everyday saga in our lives. We are so given to scientific inventions and technologies that we now are slaves to them and guess what! This taking us to know where.

I agree that scientific inventions have revolutionaries we think, look, walk, talk, sleep, eat, drink and what not!

In other word it has changed the way we live. Someday sit with your parents and your grandparents and try to learn how to live without technology. In summers, just to get the few hours relief from the scorching heat they had to fill the cooler, steed in the right direction and again refill after few hours. Clearly they did not have the luxuries to up the remote control and turn on the air conditioner while not moving even an inch. In winters they had to walk miles and get dry woods and coal to ignite and warm themselves up. They were not very privileged to push the button of room heaters and get rid of shivering instantly. Oh! Do you think strangle was only seasonal? No, it was every day high power strangle. They dint go to school by buses and vans and they had to even walk miles and sometimes kilometre. They could not light up the burner until they bought good quality wood and also fruits and vegetables from the market and guess what even bicycle was the luxury let alone motorbikes and cars. But, have you ever seen them cursing there childhood and renting that why scientific revolution did not take place when they were kids?

The beautiful part is that they were happy and content with whatever they had and never nagged and complained about anything. Instead they cherish and tell stories about how fun was their childhood. And we also love listening about it, don’t we?

This is the crux of this article. Here I would like to put forward my point that scientific inventions are not synonym to happiness and both are separate entities.

Today science is living in us and we are breathing it. Science has conquered many citadels and we now have access to artificial oxygen and human cloning and how far do we want to go? Scientific inventions have made us reach universe. From a child’s birth to someone’s death science and inventions are omnipresent. But, between all this do we even sit back and think that are we really happy while we are busy tapping smiles on technology’s best gift that is our mobile phones. Do we actually have curves on our faces? Are we really happy as we intend to look on our social media? I guess we are all afraid to face our real selves and our now comfortable in wearing our fake masks where we seem to be elated and joyous but in reality are not.

How ironical it is that in the 21st century when one can easily have luxuries of all the technological inventions that have made life easier but all this put together has failed to bring carefree smiles on our faces. In a way technology and inventions have made us more dependent and depressed. No I am not exaggerating but putting forward mere facts. Between the keys of the keyboard and gush and scream of big machines, somewhere in between we feel incomplete and unhappy. Everything good comes with a price tag on it and so is with scientific inventions. For all the ease it provides us in equal proportion comes our sacrifice of happiness and relief. And sadly however willing us maybe we are not able to get of this vicious circle of science and technology. The reader might misinterpret that I cursing science and inventions and giving it a tag of a bane. No my dear friends, science is a greatest boon in our lives. Life was never as comfortable and easy since our evolution as it is these days. I am talking about the distress that is the side effect of it. Today thanks to the scientific inventions world has become a global village. We can connect and communicate with anyone within Nano seconds, but that does not measure the happiness and excitement of longing for a handwritten letter from a loved one.

Even today, if we get technology to exchange bodies and mind and take a sneak peek into our future, trust me it will still not guarantee to bring joy to our hearts. Moreover, it will result in disgust, ruthlessness, anger and dissatisfaction.

A 100 years ago people led a happy and long lives without the hint of what scientific inventions are. And today when we are surrounded by them we find no sense of accomplishment. While swiping and tapping stories and posts on Instagram and Facebook aren’t you filled with displeasure and sit back and end up comparing our lives with other people. We all do that right? How wonderful it would had been if we had not known that Mrs. Gupta was enjoying her summer vacations in Singapore, we would have been happier eating popcorns and watching a Romcom in our drawing room. But oh lethal technology! One post and our mood oscillated at 360 degrees.

Ok let us talk about the facts. A report says the more we spend time on our phones, laptops, and computers and tabs the more we receive sleeplessness, anxiety, depression in return.

Oh, did I not tell you that scientific inventions of course have done wonders in medical system but have equally affected our health and wellbeing. We even sweat out on technology driven machines like trade mill. Can’t we go and run in the open air? To build biceps we rely on protein supplements and not fruits and vegetables. And all of this artificial intake is leaving no stone unturned to ruin her health. Today our weekends mean movies, Television shows, chatting etc. We are confined in our four walled world surrounded by gadgets and don’t bother to step out and breath some happy moments in fresh air.
